INTRODUCTION

The campus is located in Belagavi riad in Dharwad and it does services in psychiatry, mental health care, neuroscience, rehabilitation and academic training. It is the most important centre for mental health services in Northern Karnataka and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and also provides modern treatment, research facilities and Postgraduates academic in Psychiatry and allied health sciiences.
The composite takes its days back to the year 1845 of British rule, when it was established as a “Lunatic Asylum" within premises like a jail to care for the mentally ill patients. In 1885, separate wards for patients were created, and in 1990 the asylum was officially separated from the jail administration. Later in the year 1922 the British Government renamed it as the Government Mental Hospital. Over the years, the composite has gradually changed from a custodial asylum to an advanced psychiatric and neuroscience center with scientific prospects for treatments and rehabilitation.
Furthermore, there is no single founder, but the institution was established and developed under the British administration in the Bombay presidency. After the independence, many of the eminent psychiatrists and administrators collaborated with the modernization. Among them, Late Dr. S. M. Channabasavanna has played an important role as a first psychiatrist and medical superintendent in the 1960s. Under his leadership, outpatient services, advanced psychiatric treatments, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and rehabilitation platforms were evolved. His hard work took him forward for the foundation for the campus growth as a teaching center for mental health.
In the current scenario, DIMHANS is maintained by a director and a team of medical professionals, academicians, and administrative staff. It offers specialised discipline psychiatry and it also functions as a center for the child psychiatry, addiction treatment, rehabilitation, and community mental health awareness. Along with its clinical services, teaching programs, and research activities, DIMHANS is still striving to play a major role in developing the mental healthcare and reduce stigma which is related to illness in Krantaka and neighbouring regions.
