It is the second oldest engineering college in Karnataka and it is the first engineering college in the private sector. It was founded by Sri S.V. Ramaswamy, Sri D.V. Narasimha Rao and Sri T. Ram Rao. The institution was established to create the best engineering tutorship that could fuel the industrial growth of the country when we became independent. The institution has served over for 80 decades and it has evolved as a modest institute of engineering (B.Tech) which has been blooming out talented engineers every year.
The campus is located on Mananadwadi Road, Mysore, is also referred to as a south campus, which is distinguished by its sister institution. National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, is not just a college. It was built in the early days with visions to enhance the country's industrial needs and to produce graduates who can contribute to the economy of the country. The institution has been granted an autonomous status by the University Grants Commission and is affiliated with Vishweshwaraya Technological University, Belagavi.
The institution has produced dignified plenum members since its establishment. One of the founders of Infosys, NR Narayan Moorthy, who had reshaped the global tech industry by its industrial revolution in the country, was one of the students at the institute. 5. Strengths and Challenges
Strengths
The college has a powerful placement index. In 2025, the IAEA's highest package reached around 50 lakhs per annum from recruiters like : Cisco, Western Digital, and HPE.
The buildings are built with modern equipment and modern engineering requirements of a technical institute and are designed according to the current educational standards.
Being located in the heart of Mysore provides a direct access and a close proximity to the students to avail Techpark visits, industrial networking, and technological workshops which is more beneficial and provides some more industrial exposure to the students of the institute.
The college holds a strong base of alumni network who have flourished in various fields of engineering, in multi-national companies, which can be beneficial for fresh graduates, for reference, and in future career planning.
Challenges
As the campus is located in the heart of the city, there are few spacious limitations which could hinder the expansion of the campus, unlike the north campus, which is about 25 acres.
Due to its popularity the cutoffs for the KCET and Comet K are often high in top 2000 to 5000 rankings, making it inaccessible for an average scorer..
As this is an older institute, given that all the labs are equipped with modern technology, the building still remains as an older heritage, requiring constant maintenance to meet the present standards compared to newly built universities recently.
6. Conclusion
The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, remains one of the most cherished engineering institutions by the students in Karnataka. The institution is successfully bridging the gap between the traditional engineering and the modern and futuristic options. While the North Campus, that is National Institute of Engineering Technology, offers modern industrial proximity, the main campus is known for its old Mysore charm combined with academic standards and a legacy of 75 years from the date of Indian Independence.
For a student seeking a disciplined environment with a land of culture and an institute with a strong placement record and an institution from which a degree would higher your standards of your resume, is NIE Mysore.
